Taking to Twitter (X), the US rapper Meek Mill, real name Robert Rihmeek Williams shared that he has been to South Africa before for a live performance. However, he expressed curiosity about the music platforms used by people in Mzansi to listen to music.

“I was asking how they listen to music in Africa because I wanna handle my business none of my contracts say they have rights to distribute me in Africa … basically looking for the money trail? Idk what platforms used in South Africa lol,” wrote Meek Mill.

Most South Africans did not take the comments of the US rapper lightly, and many expressed their discontent on social media. One notable critic was South African Hip Hop veteran Rashid Kay. The veteran in SA Hip Hop and commentator, Rashid Kay, openly rebuked Meek Mill, calling him out not to be one of the “dumb Americans” for posing a mocking question about Africa and specifically South Africa.

“Don’t embarrass yourself, the DSPs are the same all over the world: iTunes, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Deezer, Amazon, Tidal, Spotify (which is not American)… Don’t be a typical Dumb-erican!” Rashid Kay said.

Meek Mill‘s comments not only triggered responses from individuals like Rashid Kay, but Sizwe Dhlomo also voiced criticism. He asserted that while people used to listen to the US rapper’s music, now he believes Meek Mill will struggle to fill up a stadium in South Africa.

“You used to get played heavy in SA… Even Championships got spins. Also, SA is highly developed. Dudes listen to music using the same platforms you listen to music on. You won’t sell out an arena here anymore though. Maybe a club.” Wrote Sizwe Dhlomo.
