Stiloooo

How would you best describe Stilo Magolide?

Stilo Magolide is a stylish young man from Jo’burg in chase for a couple bricks of gold for himself and his family. Where fashion, music, style, streets and just urban youth culture meets. That’s Stilo Magolide.

Where did you grow up and what were you like as a teen?

I grew up in Kenilworth which is in the South of Jo’burg. I was the same way that I am now but obviously I am older and wiser now.

When did you start rapping and when did you start taking it seriously?

I was rapping since I was a kid but it was never a serious thing like I want to be a rapper or anything, it was just reciting other people’s songs that I liked. One of the first songs I knew by heart was a local song by a Hip Hop trio from Durban called TRL. From there I recited a lot of Bone Thugs and Biggie. I only started taking rap seriously 2 years ago.

What inspired you to pursue rap as a career?

I felt like there were a lot of whack rappers in the mainstream and I thought I could do it better. I later realised that it was a lot harder than I thought but my pride wouldn’t let me quit.

What came first Rap or Design?

By definition I’m a Designer stylish Rapper.

What inspired you to start W.A.T.E.R?

A friend of mine, his name is Mandisi Singaphantsi. He actually came up to me and said we should start a brand. I was actually procrastinating the whole thing for a long time but since he is a visual artist he thought we should merge the arts and the fashion together and create a brand. I was like let’s call it W.A.T.E.R and then we later came up with an acronym for WATER which is Winners Achieve True Excellence Religiously.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from everyday life man, people around the city, my upbringing and my friends.

How did you meet the BoyznBucks?

Most of us used to work in retail around the same time and around the same spaces so we bumped into each other back then. Our common link that put some of us together was a chick called Mome Nale who was a quater of Cream Cartel.

How has the crew changed your perspective on life?

It taught me a lot of responsibility you know. It taught me to be more caring towards others and considerate towards other people’s thoughts, opinions, feelings and just having brothers to build with is one of the biggest gifts you can ask for.

How do you prepare for your shows?

I just vibe with my DJ and go to the show.

What are your thoughts on the current state of hip hop?

I think it’s on the up and up man. SA Hip Hop is only getting more competitive, more intense, more exciting. The sky is the limit right now man. The sky was the limit 10years ago but we are about to orbit and start performing at like royal stages.

What’s your biggest challenge as an artist in SA?

Capital. I am an independent artist so everything is from my own pocket.

When can we expect a full length project from Stilo?

The tape is dropping this September and it will be titled Cameron Diaz.

What do you do for fun?

I live my life for fun haha.

I am sure the ladies want to know if you are seeing anyone?

Ladies, Stilo Magolide is very much single haha

Any words of wisdom to rappers on the come up?

Stay true to yourself man, don’t ever lose yourself for anything or for anyone. Don’t ever do anything to make other people happy just stay loyal to yourself. You should also be loyal to people who are loyal to you because the people you keep around you will be there forever. When the music stops, if you weren’t loyal to anyone……
