DJ Vigilante, a seasoned veteran in the music scene, understands the intricacies of the industry and the pitfalls that artists often stumble into during their peak moments. During the Secure The Bag section with Cassper Nyovest and other panellists, the popular SA Hip-hop DJ revealed certain blunders musicians make while they’re at the pinnacle of their fame.

Vigilante said that artists should understand how to handle their finances and be able to utilise their music royalties and masters to make more money. “I think obviously how to manage your funds that’s very important and also. I think the fundamental thing, I can speak from the record label side. You should know what royalties are, what is a royalty, what is a master,” he said.

“You can own your master but if you cannot exercise your master rights to earn your income for me it is useless. Because it’s sitting there, it can generate an extra amount of streams for a lifetime thing. But this is where now you need some muscle or something to say how can I generate more money using my master.

“For example, COVID hit, that’s when now you can say, there’s such thing as a sync deal. I can go knocking at a particular office and say okay guys, you guys are shooting a movie, use my music licenses. That money is snyc money that has to go through the whole royalty process. So a lot of these things are mismanagement, it’s not knowing what to do with money.” DJ Vigilante added.
