1. Proverb – Now Or Never Remix*

Very few can do what he did here. This is one of his finest moments on wax. Everything Proverb does and is about lives on this verse. He is a crafty dude who writes clever witty interconnected phrases with enough of a moral slant to even deem him socially conscious. This song had a slew of mcis write to it, few owned it like my number one pick for Verse Of The Year. Damn near perfect verse.

2. Nasty C – Juice Back remix

The kid is a class act. Seamless, effortless, natural, sparks of that 19 year old Nasty from Queens that signaled a new era for hip hop. Separated the boys from the men here, advantage boys. #VOTY2016

3. Cassper Nyovest – Ngud

When most people think of best verse they usually think quick fire flow and super layered verses, indeed when done right that could be the case. With that said my third pick might seem anomalous. I’ve always said Cassper is almost unfuckwitable on his vernac shit. Undoubtedly most would mention his verse on Nadia Nakai’s The Man or Same Chair As Kanye but it takes some dexterity to make the most famous verse of 2016. #VOTY2016

4. Khuli Chana – Yipikayay

And then he just raps. On a song where AKA Dominates the flow with his signature cadence that even Reason borrowed on here. Khuli sticks to his meandering ever malleable untraceable moswako flow. Where most moswako rappers have always had a solid grasp of flow and rhythm Khuli is easily the most mesmeric with it. Magical to listen to. #VOTY2016

5. N’veigh – Denneboom

For the last couple of years N’veigh has been trying to carve a space for himself in the much changed hip hop landscape with party songs and radio friendly efforts. Here he abandons the mainstream play and just spits. Shows why it’s good to still have a pen in this overly saturated market. Good solid entedre stacked verse. #VOTY2016

6. Reason – Mercy

This guy can do alot, when he up to it. He has a way of sitting on a beat that is awe inspiring, quite genius in his use of space on beats. This verse woulda been higher had he not seriously said “I can like a tuna fish” #VOTY2016

7. AKA – verse 2 Dream work

I hope all these beautiful poppy songs he is making work for him cuz he is truly good at hitmaking. We will just be demanding at least a Verse a year from one of S.A’s better pens. #VOTY2016

8. Ginger Trill – David Genero

The only mc on this list who seems to take special care with the pen. I can almost imagine Trill reading the lyrics back to himself like “that shit crazy”. They really don’t make ’em like Trill no more. Wish there was more room in the game for the likes of him. He might have a battle in ahead of him in making people care about his story, but thankfully his pen game is not in need of such a panacea. #VOTY2016

9. Okmalumekoolkat – Don Dada

Who wasn’t happy to just hear some new shit with Smi beasting on it. Makes one excited for whatever he is cooking, that said it’s yet another KoolKat feature verse that could be interchangeable with any song he has been on. The flow is still very far. #VOTY2016

10. Rouge – Now Or Never Lefemme Remix

It’s hard to not take notice of Rouge when she spits. She is a technically gifted spitter and has mad flow to boot. It’s in the content where her limits are exposed. Here she shows clearly that she is many levels above the female mcis in S.A as a matter of fact she would have stood out amongst alot of the male mcis on the initial remix. #VOTY2016
