At this point, all the attention has been shifted to Amapiano, but DJ Switch thinks there are other reasons why SA Hip Hop is in its current state. Speaking during an interview on Gigi Lamayne’s POV Podcast, the veteran DJ detailed that the passing away of big-name SA rappers also contributed to the genre hitting rock bottom.

“This is what I’ve summed up in my opinion, for me, it’s like we are in this slump only because I feel it’s all the deaths that have been hovering around the genre, how people have been taken out, how people are dying.”

“What we had in South Africa was not an American sort of Hip Hop tale, because what people see in the States is what we experiencing now for the first time live with our big artists and we’ve never had that. We’ve never had like mental health being such a big thing with depression where our artists are taking their lives, not just big artists but young artists too.” DJ Switch said.

The Now Or Never hitmaker added that most young artists are scared to tap into SA Hip Hop because of the tragic passing of SA rappers hence they opt to hop on Amapiano. “People are sort of like maybe that’s not a good genre to go in, now it’s a fear thing if you look at Piano, people are happy, they are succeeding, they’re making money. But if you look at Hip Hop, it’s a dark space,” Switch added.
