In the realm of South African hip-hop, this year has seen a decent influx of music releases, showcasing the genre’s vitality. However, there’s a noticeable gap when it comes to generating crossover hit songs that could contend for the coveted title of “Song of the Year.” Reflecting on last year, K.O.’s “SETE” made an impact despite not being a traditional hip-hop track. Its association with a rapper earned some recognition for SA hip-hop, but that has not been the case whatsoever this year.

Speaking at YFM as they select their song of the year contender, SA rappers such as Blxckie, Ms Cosmo and Moozlie gave credit to a non-hip hop song “iPan” by Dlala Thukzin which has been rocking the airwaves for a significant period.

Ms Cosmo

“My prediction for the song of the year for this December taking it all the way to the top, Dlala Thukzin because he made iPlan,” Ms Cosmo said.

Blxckie

“My prediction for song of the year iPlan Dlala Thukzin the greatest song out right now. So many remixes, so many different ways to enjoy that song.”

Moozlie

“Where are we? Are we in Germany? Are we in Maboneng? Are we in the North? Because there are just different songs for different vibes. But I think Afrotech is having a moment right now, it’s either it’s gonna be iPlan, or it got a few more weeks to hold on but it could make it. But I think Mohogan Sun, that one is spiritual. Im gonna put my money on Afrotech, I’m gunning for Murdah, let’s go Murdha!!”

With that being said, It remains to be seen if “iPlan” can break the mould and fulfil the expectations into the broader conversation surrounding standout songs of the year. But it’s not against all odds as most prominent artists are backing it.
