The statements made by the seasoned rapper have ignited intense debate within the local hip-hop scene. Stogie T‘s comments have not only bewildered a number of South African hip-hop enthusiasts but have also provided an opportunity for his fellow peers to weigh in, including fellow veteran rapper Rashid Kay.

Taking to Twitter (X), Rashid Kay shared a picture of himself wearing a sweater shirt with an imprint of SA Hip Hop classic albums. “SA Hip Hop Classic Albums… And it’s not even all of them,” wrote Rashid Kay. Taking from the shirt with a list of SA Hip Hop albums, the list consists of AKA’s Levels, K.O’s Skhanda Republic, Kwesta Darka II, Nasty C Strings And Bling, Emtee Avery, Youngsta CPT 3T and many others.

These albums have played a significant role in shaping the South African hip-hop landscape and have garnered widespread acclaim from both fans and critics. The debate about what qualifies as a “classic” album in hip-hop is subjective and can vary from person to person.

However, in his defence, Stogie T said that the only album that is close to being a classic in SA Hip hop is Emtee’s Avery. “I think the closest to me being a classic is Avery. It’s the closest is like when I hear that album top to bottom I go it pretty much got that guy, there’s that battle rapper in me that’s like I wish he had a little bit,” said Stogie T.

While Stogie T’s comments may have sparked controversy, they have also reignited the conversation around the rich and vibrant history of South African hip-hop, ensuring that the legacy of this genre will continue to evolve and grow.
