While the diversity of languages in South Africa is a rich tapestry, Priddy Ugly believes that there are several reasons why some SA rappers find it difficult to rap in their native tongues. During a YFM interview, the Ntja’ka hitmaker was questioned about the art of crafting rhymes and maintaining coherence when rapping in the vernacular.

“When it comes to vernac, how do you actually go about making things rhyme and make sense?” Ayanda MVP asked Priddy Ugly during the interview. In response, the Come To My Kasi hitmaker explained that rappers may not have the extensive vocabulary available in vernacular as they do in English. However, he emphasized that utilizing vernacular in rap requires practice and skill development.

“We dont have all that jargon in vernac, we dont know it, I didn’t study it you know so it does take practice,” Priddy Ugly said. “One thing I have noticed about a lot of artists in the game is that like when you meet them live they speak vernac, but when you hear them in the music it’s like people dont feel comfortable enough to like how do I put together these metaphors, these similes in my language, it’s very difficult.”

Priddy Ugly mentioned that during his tenure at Ambitiouz Entertainment, there was encouragement for him to incorporate vernacular language into his rap. He further noted that K.O was among those interested in signing him, appreciating his skill in rapping in his native language.

“I really genuinely also thank when I was signed to Ambitiouz Entertainment in 2016, I kinda had like a vernac song or two at the time, and they were like (interested). K.O himself when he was trying to sign me back in 2016.” Priddy Ugly said.
