The annual awards ceremony is traditionally held towards the end of each year, and the 2023 edition was eagerly anticipated, given the significant volume of music releases throughout the year. Speaking during a Culture Chopp session on Choppin’ It With Budha T Podcast, Rashid Kay who is part of the organizers of the prestigious awards ceremony shed light on the reasons behind this abrupt decision.

The veteran rapper and media personality stated that hosting both the SA Hip Hop Awards and the Back To The City event in the same year seemed nearly impossible. In their decision-making process, it became apparent that Back To The City (BTTC) took precedence in 2023, especially since it was being held to celebrate 50 Years of Hip Hop.

“Let me tell you what happened bro, like after the COVID, we had COVID in 2020 and 2021. So when we came back in 2022 Back To The City was in October instead of April, so it was very difficult for us having the Back To The City in October and South African Hip Hop Awards in November. Like a month later you must host this, it was crazy,” Rashid said.

Rashid Kay added that the outlook for the 2023 SA Hip Hop Awards is not entirely bleak, as there are intentions to reschedule them for early 2024, with a new date poised to be revealed soon. “So SA Hip Hop Awards are still gonna happen, new date. So what we planned is we do them earlier in the year instead of November or December so that we have enough time to organise Back To The City in October,” he said.
