10 SA Rappers We Think Should Be On @MTVBASE #SAHottestMCs 2015 List (By Ranking)

Once again MTV Base will be releasing it’s annual  SA’s Hottest MC’s list which is usually  compiled by a group of industry veterans. Last year they had MC and producer Amu, ,Naked DJ, Mo Flava, Loot Love, Kevin Mdubeki, DJ Vigilante, Slikour and MTV Base’s music programmer Melanie Triegaard.  Providing even more cred to this historical TV occasion was legendary master lyricist Tumi, who broke down the criteria on what makes a hot MC. As expected this forthcoming list will be as controversial as the last one and we must admit it’s hard fitting 10 MCs in one box but we tried!. Below is a list of  10 SA MCs we think should be on this year’s list by ranking!

1. Cassper Nyovest

Cassper Nyovest has really proven that he is probably the most successful musician in SA at the moment. The rapper sold platinum has international features such as Talib Kweli’s and  the Game . According to Oskido and MTN the rapper has just signed the biggest endorsement deal the SA Music Industry has ever seen. Never mind that he is going to be the first rapper to ever attempt to fill up The Dome . Obviously a lot of people will be caught between AKA and Cassper but numbers don’t lie, the rappers numbers are way on top be it audio downloads, youtube views and sales. Whilst we wouldn’t necessarily coin this as a no brainier, Cassper has done so many ground breaking things this year and he deserves the crown.

2. AKA

2015 has been the most groundbreaking year for AKA’s career. The rapper crossed several boundaries that he had never crossed and some that SA Hip Hop had never crossed too. AKA did a lot of features this year and didn’t release a lot of his own music. The Doro Mega’s 2014 release Levels was certified gold this year. He has been riding the wave from the success of Levels and managed to scoop several awards and groundbreaking international nominations. The Supa Mega was the first SA rapper to ever be on the Tim Westwoods Crib Session Freestlye. Music wise AKA is superior but Cassper has the numbers and the mass appeal!

3. KO

K.O’s album Skhanda Republic went gold and he has been releasing singles from the project until now. The rapper has managed to get himself several accolades with the project and his singles all made the charts including the One Time which he recently release featuring Ma-E, Maggz and Masandi. The Skhanda god also had several features which where hit tracks such as Nandi Mngoma’s Skhanda Love. Cara Cara also became the first SA Hip Hop video to reach 2 million views earlier this year.

4. Ricky Rick

Riky Rick released his debut album titled Family Values this year and was recently certified gold. We received hits like Boss Zonke and Sondela from Riky while he did several features to. Riky recently dropped a new single which reached a 100 000 views on Youtube in just 4 days. His feature game has been very consistent doing songs with rappers the North god and Major League.

5. Khuli Chana

Khuli Chana made his come back official this year after he dropped 9 Shots, Mahambayedwa and No Lie there was no denying his relevancy and reach. No Lie made it on to charts in the U.K, Nigeria, Botswana Tanzania and more. He was also featured on Gigi Lamaynes Ice Cream Remix which was one of the biggest songs when it came out.

6. Ifani

iFani dropped his historical album titled titled “I Believes In Me: 2nd Quadrant” which went gold on the day it was released. The rapper went on to  release the first video off the album which is titled “Ayadelela” currently sitting on 170 000 views on youtube after only 2 months of being released.

7. Tumi

Tumi dropped a surprise album titled Return Of the King back in June which was well received among hard core hip hop heads. The Lyricism was on point and you can’t deny the radio friendly  VISA which generated good views on Youtube and currently sitting on 117 000 Youtube views

8. Kid X

Kid X who had only been seen on features and singles finally dropped a full length project earlier this month which was downloaded 100 000 times in the short space of an hour 30 minutes. The project later became the first project to be downloaded half a million times in just a week. The rapper also has a wide feature catalog having been on several different artists tracks.

9. Fifi Cooper

Fifi Cooper came in with a bang this year after releasing her hit single Kisses which topped several charts. The Kisses video is currently sitting on 151 000 views on youtube and Fifi has dropped 2 new videos after it. Monate C and Puntsununu are doing fairly well. Fifi is a great rapper and freestyles on social media speak volumes.

10. L-Tido

L-Tido who has been one of the most featured artists in 2015 did not release a lot of his own music but that which he released was/ is constantly on the airwaves. Dhlala Ka Yona was the most played song on SA radio for a while and the video did over 100 000 views on youtube in it’s first week of release.
