Stogie T Opens Up About Family Tragedy That Inspired “Blood Labs”

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Stogie T revealed that “Blood Labs” was originally written years ago for a cousin taken too soon and too violently. Tragically, the song’s relevance endured, as he had to confront the death of another cousin just months ago. “The same pain returning. The same script. The same atmosphere,” he wrote, reflecting on the haunting cycle of grief that continues to affect his family and community.

Describing the song as a “study of life on the margins,” Stogie T and producer D.R.U.G.Z paint a stark portrait of neighbourhoods where violence, poverty, and numbness converge. “A killing draws a crowd the way church bells used to. Funerals are routine. Gunshots as punctuation, sirens as harmony, mothers crying on loop, justice disappearing into silence, unpaid debts, unspoken vendettas,” he explained. The track seeks to convey the chilling detachment that can arise when tragedy becomes commonplace, while also examining the human cost of systemic neglect.

Despite the weight of despair in both his personal life and the communities he depicts, Stogie T emphasises resilience. Quoting 2 Corinthians 4:8, he reminds listeners, “…we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair.” The message is clear: grief may be inherited, but hopelessness is not.

Blood Labs is a gripping, reflective piece that blends social commentary with deeply personal storytelling, setting the tone for Anomy, an album poised to leave a lasting impact on South African hip-hop.
