The rapper and other artists signed under the controversial label enjoyed a good ride at the record label, but he and his partner Teekay were not tied to any contractual obligation. Speaking during an interview on Maraza’s Podcast The Life Sofa, Jay Jody revealed that there was no contract that was signed between Ambitiouz Ent and Benchmarq, rather their existence at the label was through a mere handshake.

“We spoke to the man and we understood each other, but also we had to wait for paperwork. Then when we were waiting for the paperwork, it came through and we went through it and we had somebody to help us as well and there were somethings that we needed to change, he said.

“When we saw those things, it was clearly red flags we were like yo let’s just ask this man to change certain things. He was like let’s get admin to fix it and we were like sure let’s have that, once you have done that bring it back so we can sign and start the work.”

Following their discussion about revising their contracts, the record label owner failed to produce a revised contract. Consequently, the rap duo began working without a formal agreement. Rather their agreement with Ambitiouz Ent was sealed by a mere handshake.

“So they didn’t come back and we doing all this stuff and there’s no black and white. So I can tell you now for two years, the deal of Benchmarq and Ambitiouz was literally a handshake, that’s why we just left, it was simple,” said Jay Jody.

Despite their lack of a formal contract with the record label, Jay Jody emphasized that B3nchMarQ took steps to protect their music masters by refraining from using the record label’s recording facilities. “So B3nchMarQ was ahead of its things for many times. There was of course a recording studio that will be provided to the artists of this label. All of us could go to one place. So what we did, we went home to Mayville to record things and we come back and say we have this.” Jay Jody added.
