Tears and Cheers: Bontle’s Heartfelt Tribute Celebrates Priddy Ugly’s “DUST” Album

The 14-track album reaffirms the famed rapper’s status as one of the finest lyricists in South African hip-hop. With DUST, Priddy Ugly exits the scene, leaving behind yet another masterpiece crafted with skilful penmanship.

Not only is the SA Hip Hop fraternity proud of how Priddy Ugly has decided to wrap up his rap career, but his long-time lover and wife, Bontle Modiselle extended a heartfelt tribute to her husband following the release of the long-awaited and reflective body of work.

Taking to Instagram, the popular South African dancer and choreographer, poured her heart out in a touching tribute reflecting on the length Priddy Ugly went through during the creative process of his last album.

“Soil. Mud. And now Dust. The end of the trilogy. That’s it. It feels so final. But you really did it. I’m Teary-eyed as I type this because I know what creating this album felt and looked like for you. Some days were hellish, others were a peace you fought for you…if you had the fight in you. And often, that fight was just to stay alive. Extremes of everything. Priddy — Ugly. What an ending.

“You’ve always said your pen is your prayer…I know God hears you, and those who hear you too, will feel you too. You hold a mirror up to allow people to see themselves or reflect of the reality of a society they live in. Love it, or hate it, it will make you feel a way.” Wrote Bontle.

In light of the album’s impressive tracklist, Bontle expressed her admiration for particular standout songs. She pointed out that “Falling” and “No Plan” hold a special place as her favourites. Nevertheless, she also acknowledged the significance of tracks like “Broken Home [Afrika’s Prayer]” and “What’s the Math” within the overall body of work.

“I have a couple favs, ‘Falling’ and ‘No Plan’ I had already heard the first drafts almost exactly a year ago, flying back from Utah on my return from NBA All-Star. I cried. Lol. Afrika loves mommy and daddy’s song ‘What’s the Math’ so of course I’m biased to it 😂. However, nothing compares to hearing her prayer in ‘Broken Home [Afrika’s Prayer]’. Has me in a chokehold,” she said.

“I’m grateful to those who held you down, those who ran, sat, tussled, and walked the journey with you. Every contribution on this body of work is beautiful. Your mind is beautiful, your soul rare, your gift is special. And May your journey of music continue to be the prayers that answers many a prayer – beyond yourself. Thank you for bearing it all. I’m so proud of you. I love you @priddy_ugly – signed, your No.1 Fan.”
