The veteran rapper shed light on the reasons behind the tepid reception of Priddy Ugly’s music by a significant portion of the South African audience. During the recent Masterclass Podcast session, Rashid Kay highlighted factors that he believes are the reason why Priddy Ugly’s music is not appealing to most South Africans.

“He’s a lyrical miracle rapper, he’s very lyrical which doesn’t appeal to most South Africans. That’s the type of music that’s very hard to sell,” Rashid said. “No matter how good Stogie is, he’s still a lyrical miracle rapper and it’s very hard to sell Stogie T’s music to ordinary South Africans,” he added.

The discussion delved deeper into the challenges that many South Africans face in appreciating quality rap music, which might explain the lukewarm reception to Priddy Ugly‘s rap skills. Rashid explained that people’s preferences for this genre are often influenced by their background and the kind of hip-hop they were initially introduced to.

“I think it depends on your background, if you started listening to your hip hop like Nas’s music, a lot of stuff becomes easy to your ears. But if you started with Kwaito or Gqom and you only discovered hip hop now you’re gonna gravitate towards the Big Zulus and you gonna find the Priddy Uglys and the Stogies hard to understand,” Rashid said.
