Are SA Rappers Proving Versatility Or Ditching Hip Hop For Making Songs Of Other Genres?

A certain Twitter user by the name of Hossam Fathy asked a question that caught the attention of many people on twitter when he asked about SA Rappers who make more music from other genres than they do of Hip Hop. A debate brewed up on twitter even with rapper Cassper commenting his view on the question posed.

“If rappers make more music of other genres than hip hop is it still showing versatility or they have ditched hip hop? Also do you think SAHHAs should nominate them because they once did hip hop even though currently they’re on different genres?, askedtweeted the user.”

Most rappers have been dropping music that doesn’t fall under the Hip Hop genre but the songs would be regarded as Hip Hop because they are of rappers. AKA has been called a pop star based on his music, Zingah and iFani have also recently dropped dance songs, Cassper & K.O have been blamed for using Kwaito sounds on their music – which begs the question “are they versatile or simply shifting away from Hip Hop.”

“Y’all don’t say nothing to drake when he’s singing. Stop acting. Leave the artists to express themselves however they want to. Youngsta dropped, big hash dropped , n veigh dropped. Buy their albums and stop complaining about what music niggas wanna make,”responded Cassper.

Here’s how twitter users weighed in on the debate :
