Taking to Twitter, Sjava took time to celebrate a massive 3-year milestone and appreciated everyone who has been supporting the 1020 Cartel brand. “Turned 3 today siyabonga,” tweeted Sjava. From humble beginnings, this vibrant collective has flourished into an artistic powerhouse that has taken the SA music industry by storm.

The alias 1020 is a dedication to flat number 1020 where Sjava and some of his crew stayed and collaborated on music as they build their brand to where it is now. Speaking on the documentary, Sjava revealed where the name 1020 came from. “You see that building with two red lines, our room 1020. That’s where the name 1020 comes from,” a cheerful Sjava said.

Producer Ruff also opened up about how his relationship with Sjava emerged and how the two became very close during their stay at the said apartment.

“In 2014, I went to a flat (apartment) so there’s a guy called Jolondi, who took me to a flat where Sjava used to stay with Vuyo Manyike,” said Ruff. So we chilled there cause we already knew each other, listening to music. I think that’s when we got tight me and him.

Speaking on the music they first created together under the banner 1020 Cartel Ruff said; “In 2014 we did Seven which was the first track, we thought let’s just try something. “Then the second one was Uthando, we also did Uthando in 2014, and from then on, I was like forget, this is it! This is you (Sjava) bro! You need to do this thing. Forgetting about rapping. You see you are nice with these raps, but this is your money. This is your future,” Ruff said advising Sjava.
