Rashid Kay Expresses Why Young Artists Must Not Be Fooled By Kanye West On His Rants About Owning Masters. The topic of owning master hasn’t died down and is nowadays addressed mostly by American rapper Kanye West who is currently on a pursuit o reclaim all his masters from Universal Music.
SA Hip Hop Awards co-founder Rashid Kay recently confronted the views Kanye has been spewing about owning masters.
When Ye began sharing details of his contracts on Twitter with Universal, West said he would not release any new music until he is free from his ties to Sony and Universal. He also labelled himself “the new Moses” and said the “music industry and the NBA are modern-day slave ships”.
“I need to see everybody’s contracts at Universal and Sony,” he tweeted on Monday. “I’m not gonna watch my people be enslaved,” added West.
Artists started expressing themselves more on issues about owning masters, and most were eager to start buying theirs back from record labels.
Rashid stated that young artists mustn’t think owning masters or buying them back is not easy.
“Don’t be fooled, Kanye West and most artists took years to be independent and own their masters. Being independent requires a serious budget, they all waited “Until They Got Their Money Right”. Stop lying to kids,” he wrote.
Here’s how tweeps reacted;
That’s easy to say when you don’t have a choice but when a major label is flaunting that money in front of you and you’ve never had it? You take that shit 98% of the time.

Nah Ye ain't lying to the kids…you break the system from within, master it and then voice your opinion to save the kids coming after you. Somebody must question it so that the next kid gets a better deal.

There was no social media during their time though. Now it's a lot more possible to make it without the labels and own your masters 🤷🏾♂️

West sued Roc-A-Fella last year, as well as Universal and his publishing company, EMI. In the EMI suit, which has since been settled, he appeared as a plaintiff alongside a newly formed company, “Please Gimme My Publishing Inc.” Kanye is now waging the same battle against Universal for his recorded copyrights, a.k.a. his masters.
