From music releases to image branding and influence, female rappers in South Africa have been integral to the growth and success of SA Hip Hop, serving as a crucial piece in the industry’s puzzle. However, veteran rapper Ginger Trill expressed concerns over the exploitation of women and girls in the Hip Hop culture, not only in SA but the world over.

Taking to Twitter (X), Trill called out for the protection of women in the Hip Hop industry against influential men whose aim is to exploit them. “Protect our sisters in Hip Hop and urban music spaces, too many nasty mofos with keys using their power and influence to exploit the girls, holding the culture back and perpetuating stereotypes about black men, nasty work!” Ginger Trill said.

In another post, the Boyzin Da Hood chanter highlighted that women now hold the reins of market appeal in Hip Hop, even though the industry is predominantly led by men. He emphasized that women play a crucial role in setting trends within the genre.

“If you don’t know, I’ll tell you sumn for the free… Hip Hop right now is women led! Yes it’s ran by the men, but the women set the tempo!Globally? They are the trend setters and taste-makers, if you deep it properly! Only a matter of time until it’s obvious here too,” he added.
