Vic Mensa Reportedly Set To Feature In Upcoming Film Biopic About ProKid. The late ProKid was one of South Africa’s best talents and collaborated with a number of SA rappers during his time. ProKid tragically passed away in August 2018 after reportedly suffering from bleeding in his pancreas. He was recently celebrated by the SA Hip Hop community on what would’ve been his 40th birthday.
It was recently reported by Black Film and TV that Oscar winning Costume Designer Ruth Carter will be a part of the production of a film titled ‘African/American’ that looks at the growth of South African Hip-Hop in post-apartheid South Africa. The film will is said to be based on the story of ProKid and Sydney Hall (Syd Money) who brought together some of SA Hip Hop’s best producers for ProKid’s Heads And Tales album.
When Carter was asked why she chose to produce this film she mentioned that she was excited to tell the story about survival and cultural identities. She continued to say, “African/American ignites the sense of right place, right time in a way that makes you believe that you can do anything you set your mind to.“
The role of Syd Money will be played by Vic Mensa. It was also reported that Blood & Water star Thabang Moloba might play the role of ProKid along side Vic Mensa. Mensa confirmed the news by reposting the news on his Instagram page, captioning the post, “next stop South Africa.“
This will be the second film made about ProKid after ‘Dankie San The Kasi Rap Bible’ that premiered on SABC 1 in 2020. The two part documentary gave an in depth look into the making of ProKid’s 2007 album ‘Dankie San’.
The documentary featured the likes of AKA, DJ Sbu, Kwesta, Slikour, Maggz and Ntsiki Mazwai.
