“My Name Has To Be On Top Of The List,” 25K On Kasi Trap
25K recently dropped his debut album Pheli Makaveli, which features trapper Emtee on the track Self Made, reigniting the love for trap rap amongst fans. Trap music has grown into its own recognisable sound in South Ah, with more rappers riding the trap wave and turning it into a sound that matches their flow. One such rapper, who has done that is 25K, who describes his sound as Kasi Trap, a sound influenced by his surroundings.
When 25K first emerged on the scene, he described his sound as being “kasi trap”, a few years later, he does still call his sound kasi trap but does acknowledge that he is a trap artist. “It is hip hop at the end of the day but Im a trap artist, I still call it kasi trap,” 25K told SA Hip Hop Mag. The rapper goes on to acknowledge how the sound has been able to grow to a point, where more rappers are coming out sounding like him. “I feel like it’s evolved in terms of how it’s influenced other rappers to come out now and be confident to sound like that,” he adds. 25K even credits himself for paving the way for some rappers. “I feel like I paved the way for rappers, who would come out sounding like me, I’m the pioneer of that sound. You cannot mention that kind of style of rap without mentioning my name. Like my name has to be on top of the list when it comes to my sound,” says 25K.
Rapper Emtee has always defended the trap sound and still does to this day. His recent feature with 25K must have sparked something in the rapper, as he has been sharing a lot of his views about trap lately. “Rappers hated on me in the beginning cos I was woke about what it is I’m doing. Some called it “the Versace flow” no sir, it’s Trap music,” tweeted the award-winning rapper. When Emtee dominated the airwaves with his trap sound he certainly made people stop and pay attention, Whilst some criticised the rapper it did not stop him from dominating the airwaves at the time.
The Roll-Up hitmaker is proud of being a trapper and he is not about to be shaken into changing anytime soon. A fan tweeted “If you believe that Emtee is the best rapper. Let’s appreciate him” the rapper was not tagged on the tweet because he retweeted and said, “I’m a trapper”.
When it comes to Emtee’s feelings towards fellow trap artist 25K, it seems to be all good vibes, so much so that it seems that Emtee wouldn’t be closed off to the idea of doing an album with 25K. A fan shared a tweet, which said “25k x Emtee album will save country hip hop will come bck I bet on you” and the award-winning rapper simply responded, “trap is back”. As to whether, the two trappers, would actually drop a full project together, only time will tell, but for now, there is the single to enjoy.
The two rappers both go hard for trap rap and are not shy when it comes to getting the recognition, they deserve when it comes to the sound. His bold statement about being a “pioneer” of his sound is a debatable one, as another person might say that Emtee is the real pioneer of trap in Mzansi. This also leaves fans with the question of is there a difference between Kasi Trap and Trap and if so how does one differentiate between the two?
