SA Hip Hop Music Dominates On Popular Telenovela ‘Gomora’. Telenovela Gomora is one of the most-watched programs in South Africa. The local production often plays South Ah music, especially from the hip hop genre during their episodes. Music from rappers such as Da L.E.S and Khuli Chana is at times heard playing between scenes.

The compilation of music on Gomora ranges from deep hip hop to commercial hip hop songs, the music is well placed between scenes, fitting perfectly. Viewers have also noted the production’s music and have praised them on social media for playing South Ah hip hop music from the likes of Khuli Chana and AKA. On the show’s latest episode, rappers Da L.E.S, Khuli Chana and Dankie Baba Sniper are just some of the hip hop artists credited by the show for additional music used.

Seriti Films, the production company behind the popular show is not using hip hop music without giving due credit. The artists behind the music played on the show do receive their proper credit on the show and are even seen on the credits at the end of each episode.

At the 15th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas), which took place earlier this year Gomora won an award for Best Achievement in Original Music/Score in a telenovela. Zethu Mashika is the man responsible for the telenovela’s score and makes sure to bring the heat and makes sure to use local music. To have your music played on a show or a commercial is a noteworthy show is an achievement for any artist especially if is done the correct way, in terms of copyright usage.

Hip Hop producers, DJ Speedsta and Gemini Major recently called out football club, Cape Town FC for using their song Mayo without permission on the club’s social media platforms for their player announcement video clip. The video was later taken down by the club after it became a legal matter, despite their initial response that a replay was used. Rapper Kwesta also took on BMW South Africa after they used a stripped-down beat version of his song, Spirit featuring Wale.
