BET International Honours The Late Riky Rick. Boss Zonke might not be with us anymore, but the late rapper has left a remarkable influence on the hip-hop culture. Riky Rick has not been a father figure in SA hip hop only, but he also left a mark outside Mzansi taking his reputable image to the global stage.
Taking to Twitter, BET announced that they will honour the South African rapper with a Global Visionary Award at the forthcoming BET Awards taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.
“Today, BET International announces South African Entrepreneur, Rapper, and Fashion Icon, Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado will be honored posthumously with the inaugural Global Visionary Award for the 2022 BET #HipHopAwards! #GlobalVisionaryAward#BET.” Read the tweet.
The award, which recognizes and honours cultural champions including musicians, DJs, and members of the music business who have made ground-breaking efforts to advance hip-hop culture on a global scale, will be given to the iconic late rapper as its first recipient.
Even though Riky’s work has been recognized on the global stage, the late rapper received his flowers at home during the SAMAs28 last month. Several musicians, including Stogie T, A Reece, and Tshego, paid a moving homage to the late Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado. Bianca Makhado, the late rapper’s wife, was honoured to speak on behalf of the Makhado family and emphasized how Riky’s passion for music and empathy for people endure even in death.
Born in KwaMashu, close to Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, Riky Rick gained widespread recognition in 2014 with the release of his breakthrough track Nafukwa, which went on to win the MTV Africa Award for Video of the Year in 2015 and showcased South Africa’s distinctive fusion of hip hop and kwaito.
As the proprietor of Cotton Club Records and Cotton Fest, a platform for the urban culture that celebrates music and fashion for up-and-coming hip-hop artists, he helped start the indie music movement in South Africa.
