YoungstaCPT Shares His Views On Die Antwoord’s Culture Appropriation
On another segment of Slikour’s interview with YounsgtaCPT they touched on a rather interesting topic about Die Antwoord’s culture appropriation which has caused major debates in the country.
Die Antwoord is a contemporary Hip Hop duo consisting of Yolandi and Watkins who are also producers, songwriters and fashionistas. Their fashion sense has landed them in hot water in the past, they rocked a Xhosa culture inspired attire for one of their 2017 album cover leading to a wide outrage from Xhosa people. The fact that they of the Afrikaans tribe made things even worse.
On a sit down with rapper YoungstaCPT, Slikour posed a question about the group’s tendency of appropriating black people’s culture. Youngsta responded by saying that he likes how they have been representing SA across the world but isn’t impressed with their method.
“First am gonna start by saying that i respect their hustle, i respect what they have done with South African Hip Hop by putting our land and our identity at the forefront because the impact that it makes it to the world, it makes them turn eye to Africans. Am i pleased with their methods? Fuck no.”
