Grammy Awards Includes SA Hip-hop In The ‘Best African Music Performance’ Category. The Recording Academy, which organizes the Grammys, has incorporated a category for ‘Best African Music Performance’ in its 2024 edition.

There is a massive euphoria among SA Hip-hop fanatics with most of them rallying behind their favourite SA rapper to win the Grammy Award next year. In a statement, via Twitter page, the Grammy Awards organizers stated that the newly added category will feature 19 music genres across Africa.

 “Our goal at the #RecordingAcademy is to recognize and honour the very best in music from across the globe. Every year, we strive to accurately represent and celebrate the various cultures, influences and genres that shape our world and provide the soundtrack to our lives.

“Today, we’re proud to announce a new category for the 66th GRAMMY Awards – Best African Music Performance. This track and singles Category recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent. Highlighting regional melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical traditions, the Category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres. SA hip-hop fans expressed their excitement by naming their favourite SA rapper who they would want to see win a Grammy Award. For some, it is bitter-sweet following the passing away of AKA whom they believe would have won one considering his immense catalogue and his recent project Mass Country.

However, names such as Nasty C, A-Reece and the late AKA are among the names that fans would like to see win a Grammy for SA Hip-hop.
