Dee Koala Reveals The Origins Of Her Stage Name
Dee Koala Reveals The Origins Of Her Stage Name. Dee Koala‘s massive rise has been nothing but phenomenal, all the way from Khayelitsha, the rapper is pulling up the weights in a cutthroat rap music industry.
With all the work she is currently displaying, one would wonder how Odwa Situma, came up with the stage name “Dee Koala.” Speaking to Drum Magazine, the Gwan hitmaker shared an interesting story on how the stage name came about. She narrated that one of her friends nicknamed her Dee and the name stuck in her head since she did not have a nickname at that time.
The celebrated rapper also stated that she chose the moniker “Koala” as her stage name because it’s her favourite animal, known for its self-assured nature, and it symbolizes her personal character.
“I had a friend of mine that nicknamed me Dee, I never had a nickname so it kinda stuck with me and a Koala is just an animal I really like. When it’s on a tree, it’s able to sleep and not be afraid to fall off so for me, that resembled confidence within thyself. It kinda made me feel like I’m in my own lane.” She said.
“If I want to take a break because I feel like music is overwhelming and people are overwhelming, I can always do that,” the rapper added.
With all that she has achieved, the rapper is aiming for more. Recently she claimed the crown for the Best Female Rapper in SA despite not being heavily involved for many years. “Booked & Busy, that’s my motto With only one album (2019) and three singles released so far, I have over one million all-time streams on Apple Music and over one million Spotify streams in the past 12 months.” Dee Koala said.
“No music videos without a sponsor since 2020, all creative directed by myself. My third annual event @4thekhaltsha has two headline sponsors and will be hosted for two days this year. Performing nationwide, from general gigs to major festivals. My music aging like fine wine, killed my features. Over 10 sync deals. I am Dee Koala and I am the Queen of South African Hip Hop.”
