The prominent DJ’s Top 5 SA Hip-hop Lyricists list featured some of the industry’s heavyweights, including Pro Kid, Stogie T, Proverb, Kwesta and Reason. Notably absent from the list was Okmalumkoolkat, whose unique style and rap flow have earned him a dedicated following.

Okmalumkoolkat took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the matter. The rapper expressed his indifference towards not making the list, sparking a discussion about the subjectivity of such rankings within the music industry. The Durban rapper also stated that he never cared about who got on the list, but he also raised alarm on the kind of rappers that qualify to be on the lyricists’ list considering his poetic flow and rhythms.

“I never cared about top bani-bani lists but I think now I kinda understand who gets on those lists and who doesn’t. I am a scholar of Hip Hop and Rap and from what I understand about rhythm and poetry, the main thing is originality and relability. I cover both by miles compared to my peers. So I would like to know from the comments below. What makes a dope lyricist in a South African context since we are in Msawawa?” Wrote Okmalumkoolkat.

His response quickly garnered attention from fans and fellow artists who praised his humble attitude and commitment to his craft. Many fans shared their support for Okmalumkoolkat, emphasizing that music should be about passion and creativity rather than external recognition.

South Africa’s hip-hop scene has witnessed a surge in talent and creativity, with artists pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds. Okmalumkoolkat’s unique blend of electronic, hip-hop, and kwaito has been influential in shaping the country’s contemporary music landscape.
