The popular radio station recently unveiled its highly anticipated annual list, which highlights the most influential and successful tracks in the South African music scene. However, the talk of SA Hip Hop not being able to capture the fans’ interest has been the main talking point for the past few years and Ukhozi FM not having an SA Hip Hop song on their list might not come as a surprise to some.

Taking to Twitter (X), entertainment commentator Phil Mpela shared the top 10 list of Ukhoz FM stating that a voting process will be announced for the listeners to choose their best song of the year. “RADIO: Ukhozi FM unveils TOP 10 SONGS OF THE YEAR contenders Voting channels will be open for the public to cast their votes for their favourite song on the Ukhozi FM SMS line 33665, contributing to the final declaration of the Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka.” Phil Mpela.

The Ukhozi FM lineup featured a blend of Amapiano and Maskandi music, with South African Hip Hop not making it onto the list. Responding to Phil Mpela’s post, famed rapper and podcaster, Zingah expressed disappointment for not seeing any SA Hip Hop song on the list. “No hip hop joint,” Zingah wrote with a heartbreak emoji.

Despite SA Hip Hop not being able to release a crossover hit song this year, Zingah believes that the genre did well in 2023. “This is one of the best years of SA Hip Hop releases. I think at the top of my mind I could say, the Tyson Sybateli project super fire, the Wordz project super fire,” Zingah said during an interview on YFM.
