Back in 2014, Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi made waves in the music scene with the release of her 13-track album “Ascension.” This project served as her catapult into the spotlight of the South African music industry, thanks in part to standout tracks like “My City,” featuring Cassper Nyovest, which soared to become a crossover sensation.

However, Toya Delazy holds the belief that many South African music enthusiasts failed to fully grasp the concept and significance of her album, including the symbolism embedded within its cover art. Regrettably, during that period, a majority of individuals labelled the artwork as “demonic,” showcasing a widespread misunderstanding of her creative intentions.

In a recent extensive Twitter post, Toya dedicated time to unravelling the profound significance behind the Ascension album cover art and elucidating the message she endeavoured to convey through it. The album cover art depicts the rapper flaunting her tongue and hands covered with gold which she said means the power of a black person over gold.

“Ascension #understandArt I wanted to heal the dehumanisation of my people, focusing on black & queer with this album – AND I wanted to tell you that ‘melanin’ is worth more than Gold as Melanin chemical compound that gives our hair, skin and eyes color.

“Melanin is sold on the market for roughly R8000 a gram and gold is only worth R1000………… <—-read that again The average human weight is 60KG right, So convert that into grams, 60000 x 8000 a average black body is worth R480000000 Just walking about, being called amaphara, gay, straight, trans, when all anyone should be saying is. We are extremely valuable,” she wrote.

In her post, Toya further emphasized that her music is imbued with numerous codes, and if listeners can successfully unlock them, they can discover a pathway to peace. “There are many more codes in my art that if you unlock you will find peace that exceeds all understanding. Art is a maze – I have catalogs, not songs. Delve in to discover the poetry and sonic vibrations created to uplift and enlighten you in every way, like it happened to me,” Toya Delazy said.
