The documentary AKALevelsX was created to commemorate the rapper’s second album, Levels, which gained enormous popularity upon its release in 2014. It aims to highlight the impact and success of the album, showcasing its cultural significance and the artist’s journey during that period.

The premiere of the documentary was held at SK Cinema in Sandton, Johannesburg, last night and attracted key figures from the South African Hip Hop industry, who gathered in large numbers to honour Kiernan Forbes’ enduring legacy.

Among them was Lynn Forbes, AKA’s mother, who shared a close mother-son relationship with the late rapper. Following the event, Lynn Forbes spoke with NewzRoom Afrika, expressing her mixed emotions about the Levels album documentary. She described it as a nostalgic and thrilling experience, reflecting on the journey captured in the documentary and its significance to her and the legacy of her late son.

“I’m absolutely thrilled, I mean it’s such an iconic moment, it really is and a lot of nostalgia and a lot of moments in the film, it really brings back so much,” said Lynn Forbes. “So I’m happy, Sony and Vth Season did such a great job with it. Everybody that’s been featured in there, I mean listening to all those stories is just an incredible feeling of pride actually. I’m so proud of Kiernan,” she added.

AKA’s sophomore album is a celebration of his rise to success and the luxurious lifestyle he achieved. The album features braggadocios raps about wealth and achievement, with tracks like “Sim Dope” and “Run Jozi” showcasing AKA’s ambition and drive. It also includes some melodic moments, with singing incorporated into the rapping. Levels was highly anticipated by fans and upon release, it became a major success in SA and beyond.
