Stogie T‘s reflections offer a glimpse into the profound impact AKA had on his peers and the broader music community. During an interview on What A Life Podcast with Slikour, Stogie T drew a parallel between his recently released Shallow EP and AKA’s conscious rap style.

“I remember having a conversation with Kiernan, he was like, I can’t rap about strife, can’t rap about problems. I’m like what do you mean, I’m like one of my favourite Kiernan joints because you hear it subtly like, Daddy Issues. Daddy Issues to me is conscious rap, that’s a song I would’ve made. What’s this, Sim Dope, Sim Dope is like about a kid who don’t got it, a kid who dont have it, but on Mass Country, he went far,” Stogie T said.

AKA wasn’t afraid to experiment. While firmly rooted in hip-hop, he incorporated elements of South African sounds and even dabbled in Afrobeats. This fusion kept his music fresh and appealed to a wider audience. Think of it as him spicing up the gumbo of American hip-hop with his own South African flavour, that was Supa Mega levels.

His rap style was a potent blend of confidence, versatility, lyrical skill, and flawless delivery. He helped redefine South African hip-hop, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
