Five years ago, in the vibrant heart of South Africa’s music scene, a movement was born. 1020 Cartel, the brainchild of multi-award-winning artist Sjava and prolific producer Ruff, emerged from the storied flat number 1020 at Tali’s Place, where dreams were woven into beats and bars.

Today, as the label marks its fifth anniversary, it stands as a towering force in African music, a creative powerhouse that has redefined artistry and artist development.

From its inception in 2019, 1020 Cartel set out to be more than just a record label. It’s a movement—a dynamic blend of record label, creative agency, music publisher, and concert producer, all united by a singular mission: to uplift and prioritise African arts and culture. The name “1020” pays homage to the humble beginnings where Sjava, Ruff, and members of the African Trap Movement crafted genre-bending sounds that would resonate far beyond the walls of their creative hub.

The journey began with iSambulo (The Revelation), a collaborative album released on August 28, 2020, introducing the world to 1020 Cartel’s eclectic roster: the soulful vocals of Yallunder, the sharp lyricism of rapper Anzo, the poetic brilliance of Nue Sam, and the traditional Maskandi mastery of Mzukulu. The project soared to number one on South African album charts, amassing over five million digital streams and signalling the arrival of a new era in music. Just months later, the release of Sjava’s extended play Umsebenzi, solidified 1020 Cartel’s reputation, debuting at number one and captivating audiences worldwide.

Over the past five years, 1020 Cartel has released ten groundbreaking music projects and forged impactful collaborations, including the acclaimed Inkabi Zezwe project with Sjava, Big Zulu, Nkabi Records, and Warner Music Africa. Each endeavour has pushed boundaries, blending traditional African sounds with contemporary flair, celebrating the roots of today’s popular culture while breaking new ground.

The label’s success is a testament to its visionary leadership. Sjava and Ruff, joined by Nothando Migogo in 2020 to bolster the business and strategy arm, have built a creative ecosystem that empowers artists to take risks and innovate. From sold-out concerts to global collaborations, including Sjava’s work with international icon Kendrick Lamar on the Black Panther soundtrack, 1020 Cartel has proven its ambition to dominate not just locally but on the world stage.

As 1020 Cartel celebrates this milestone, the label took to social media to express gratitude to its supporters: “Five years of 1020 Cartel ❤️ Thank you to everyone that’s been part of the journey 🙏❤️ #1020cartel.”

Looking ahead, 1020 Cartel shows no signs of slowing down. With plans for new releases, international tours, and continued investment in artist development, the label is poised to carry its movement into the future.
