Buzzi Lee Pushes Back Against Freestyle Pressure In DJ Speedsta Interview. The freestyle debate in South African Hip Hop continues to heat up, and this time, Buzzi Lee has found herself at the centre of the conversation.

During a sit-down on 5FM Hip Hop Nights, DJ Speedsta posed the infamous question: “Can you freestyle?” Without hesitation, Buzzi Lee responded candidly, “No, I’m not gonna claim it because you want to put me on the spot.”

Speedsta, visibly calm and collected, responded with his now familiar frustration: “Yoh, what’s up with rappers these days who don’t want to freestyle?

But unlike others who’ve been caught off guard, Buzzi Lee explained her stance with refreshing honesty. She revealed that her journey into music wasn’t built on battling in cyphers or dropping bars off the dome, but rather through her love for the craft behind the scenes. “I went to school for behind the scenes. So what I majored in actually was TV writing and TV sound for television. So I wasn’t shook, I kinda gravitated towards music,” she said.

This exchange follows hot on the heels of a similar moment just weeks ago, when Speedsta challenged rapper K.Keed to freestyle in the same studio. She too declined, sparking massive reactions and polarising debates within the SA Hip Hop community about whether an MC who doesn’t freestyle can still be considered authentic.

For many purists, freestyling is a rite of passage and an essential skill that defines a rapper’s credibility. But for a new wave of artists like Buzzi Lee, the focus is shifting towards crafted records, storytelling, and creating music that resonates beyond the moment
