Buzzi Lee Reflects On Life In Pheli And the Blessings Of Seeing Beyond The Hood. Growing up in Pheli, a township in Pretoria West popularly known as Atteridgeville, Buzzi Lee experienced both the challenges and the unique bonds that township life brings. Life wasn’t easy, but her surroundings instilled in her resilience, gratitude, and the ability to see value in people from all walks of life.

In a recent interview, Buzzi Lee described life in Pheli as both challenging and formative. “Life was hard; not everybody has it easy,” she admitted. Growing up in a large household surrounded by neighbours who became like family, she learned early on the value of community and acceptance. “They didn’t have the same background as mine, but they were still my friends, and I started loving them the way they were. That’s how I know them—I don’t know anything else.”

Reflecting on her journey, Buzzi Lee expressed gratitude for the opportunities that allowed her to expand her perspective beyond the township. “I see today that certain opportunities I had kind of built me to be somebody who sees more than what’s around me. I was blessed enough to at least expand my mind beyond what I see in the hood. Some people don’t go much further than their house, like the hood, so it’s like, this is a blessing.”

This balance—between the raw reality of township life and the ability to envision more—has influenced both her character and her artistry. Pheli gave her the grit, but opportunities beyond its borders gave her the vision. Today, she carries both with her, blending the authenticity of her roots with the broader outlook that continues to drive her journey in South African hip hop.
