DJ Fae Fae Reflects On The Hardest Year That Changed Her Life Forever

DJ Fae Fae Reflects On The Hardest Year That Changed Her Life Forever. Ten years ago, South African hip-hop DJ and YFM radio host Faith Makubung, better known as DJ Fae Fae, stepped into what she now calls “the craziest year of my life.”

In a heartfelt reflection shared recently on social media, she opened up about 2016—a whirlwind of joy, pain, and profound personal transformation that saw her become a mother, battle postpartum depression, and ultimately reclaim her power through divorce.
The year began with a celebration. In January, DJ Fae Fae’s baby shower marked the excitement of impending motherhood. But just weeks later, in February, her son was delivered via emergency C-section, an experience she described as traumatic, leaving deep emotional scars. “My baby got cut out of my stomach 😭,” she wrote, a raw reminder of the physical and psychological toll of childbirth.
By March, the weight of postpartum depression hit hard. For eight gruelling months, she navigated the darkness of mental health struggles while adjusting to life as a new mother. “The postpartum depression rocked me,” she shared, highlighting a reality many women face but few discuss openly.
As the months passed, another truth emerged: the marriage she had entered was no longer serving her. In October 2016, she emotionally began the process of separation from her then-husband. The decision sparked a year-long battle over custody of their young child, prolonging the pain but also solidifying her resolve. By January 2017, she was officially on her own; still battling depression, but now focused solely on her baby and her healing.
Looking back a decade later, DJ Fae Fae’s story is one of resilience and quiet victory. Her son is now thriving in Grade 5, and she and her ex-husband co-parent peacefully in a parallel arrangement that prioritises their child’s well-being. Today, she stands proudly as a happily single mother, at peace with the path she chose.
“This was the year I took my power back,” she declared in her post. The contrast between October 2016 and January 2017—two images symbolising her journey from despair to determination—serves as a powerful testament to her growth.
