Diphetogo Fine Art Exhibition Opens Call for North West Visual Artists. From the heart of the North West Province, a new visual arts showcase is set to celebrate the women whose influence has shaped lives and communities.
The Diphetogo Fine Art Exhibition will take place from 25 to 29 August 2026 at Mmabana Taung under the theme Diphetogo: A Homage to Women Who Brought About Change in Your Life.
Presented by Motswako Culture (Pty) Ltd, the exhibition invites visual artists from across the province to create works inspired by women who have made a lasting impact on their personal journeys or society at large. Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their work, receive a participation fee and engage directly with visitors throughout the five-day event.
Hosting the exhibition at Mmabana Taung adds further significance to the initiative. The cultural centre has played a vital role in nurturing artistic talent in the North West for decades, providing emerging creatives with opportunities to develop their craft, collaborate and showcase their work. The exhibition aims to build on that legacy by creating a platform where art, heritage and storytelling intersect.
Taung itself carries historical and cultural importance. Internationally recognised as the site where the Taung Child fossil was discovered, the area also remains deeply rooted in Setswana culture and tradition. Organisers believe the location offers the perfect backdrop for an exhibition that celebrates identity, resilience and the women whose contributions continue to inspire positive change.
The event also aligns with the objectives of the Mzansi Golden Economy by promoting local creative industries, expanding public access to the arts, encouraging cultural tourism and creating sustainable opportunities for visual artists in the province.
Since opening its flagship centre in Mmabatho in 1991, Mmabana has established itself as one of the North West’s leading cultural institutions. Over the years, it has helped develop some of South Africa’s most recognised creatives, including HHP, Presley Chweneyagae, Morafe, Mo Molemi, Khuli Chana, Aus Tebza, Thebe Lenyora and Stone Seate. While Diphetogo is independently organised by Motswako Culture, choosing Mmabana Taung as its venue acknowledges the institution’s long-standing contribution to the country’s creative sector.
Applications are open to visual artists residing in the North West Province. Interested applicants must submit at least six artworks, artwork details including dimensions, medium and materials, high-quality JPEG or PNG images, an artist biography, contact details and information about their district, village, town or area within the province.
Only ten artists will be selected for the exhibition. Successful applicants will be notified by 10 August 2026 and will receive exhibition contracts from Motswako Culture (Pty) Ltd. Details regarding the transportation of selected artworks will be communicated directly to successful participants.
