DJ Sliqe Raises Concern Over SA Hip-Hop’s Collaboration Culture: “It’s Making the Game Boring.” DJ Sliqe has opened up about what he sees as a growing problem in hip-hop, with artists becoming increasingly reluctant to collaborate outside their established circles.
The producer and DJ believes the decline of organic collaborations is making the culture feel less exciting and more predictable. “Those features, those 16s, were being given out. 16s are being gatekept these days. Like, niggas are not collaborating unless a producer comes in between you guys and says, ‘Yo, let’s collaborate,’” DJ Sliqe said.
According to Sliqe, artists once had more freedom to exchange verses and jump on each other’s records without needing someone else to facilitate the connection. He believes that culture has gradually disappeared, with artists now largely keeping collaborations within their own camps.
“Artists do not collaborate outside of their camps anymore. It’s making the game boring. It’s making the game mundane,” he added.
Sliqe’s comments highlight his concern that the current approach to collaborations is limiting the natural exchanges that have historically helped hip-hop evolve. Features and guest verses have long been a way for artists from different circles to test their chemistry, introduce new sounds and create unexpected moments.
For Sliqe, the growing dependence on producers or intermediaries to initiate collaborations reflects a wider shift in the culture. He appears to be calling for a return to a more open environment where artists can freely connect, exchange 16s and work together without being restricted by their respective camps.
