Speaking to SA Hip Hop Mag, the Xhosa rapper said the song carried a simple message aimed at men and how they treat the women in their lives.

“I’m simply telling them to spoil their women and shower them with money and gifts,” Big Xhosa said. “There is no complicated message.”

He said the song was intended to encourage men to show greater appreciation for women while also encouraging women to ask for what they deserve.

“I want us to start showing appreciation to women. They are the greatest and the best gift God gave to men. They should be treated like eggs. That’s what I want you to think of when listening to this song,” he said.

While “Wapheni Imali” carried a playful concept, Big Xhosa said his approach to music had become considerably more serious. He previously leaned into humour as a way of building his audience, but said that chapter of his career was now behind him.

“That is not the case with my music currently. That used to be the case because I wanted to use humour to build a platform. I’ve since taken a different direction, and my music is very serious,” he said.

Big Xhosa’s career was initially propelled into the spotlight by a viral diss track, which gave him the visibility needed to establish himself in the industry. Since then, he has focused on turning that attention into a sustainable career.

“It’s opened doors for me and allowed me to make a living doing what I love and never have to work a job; that’s how it changed my life,” he said.

The rapper described the journey since his breakthrough as one of continuous growth, explaining that the initial viral moment was only the beginning.

“It has been a journey of learning and growing. The diss track gave me the attention, but I had to show people that I could actually build a career,” he added.

According to Big Xhosa, one of the biggest challenges throughout his career had been operating without the financial backing and infrastructure of a record label.

“Honestly speaking, the challenges have always been not having a record label or financial support behind the talent. That restricts one from bringing the full vision to life,” he said.

Despite those limitations, his belief in his own abilities remained a driving force.“I believe in myself so much; I’m my biggest fan. Faith in myself has kept me going. I know and have always proven to myself that I will eventually win,” Big Xhosa said.

Beyond the song, Big Xhosa also entered a new phase of his career after joining forces with Asanda Empires. The artist is optimistic about what the partnership could bring and has set his sights on significant growth.

“I’m hoping for a fruitful partnership, and that we become the biggest in the game. Watch out!” he said.

With “Wapheni Imali” offering a straightforward message about appreciating women and his new management partnership opening another door, Big Xhosa appeared focused on building beyond the viral moments that first introduced him to a wider audience.
