EC vs KZN Cypher Officially Kicks Off As iFani & Zakwe Lead Provincial Hip-Hop Showdown

EC vs KZN Cypher Officially Kicks Off As iFani & Zakwe Lead Provincial Hip-Hop Showdown. The long-awaited Eastern Cape vs KwaZulu-Natal cypher officially gets underway today, bringing together MCs from two of South Africa’s strongest regional hip-hop communities.

Eastern Cape veteran iFani confirmed the launch on social media this morning, announcing a day of live action and new cypher performances. Fans can tune into Facebook Live at 9 am, where iFani, KZN heavyweight Zakwe and the Xhosa HipHop page will appear together.
The first official cypher videos are scheduled to drop at 2 pm, with one MC representing the Eastern Cape and another representing KwaZulu-Natal going head-to-head in the opening round. “Let’s see who takes the 1st round,” iFani wrote as the provincial clash moved from anticipation to action.
The project has been taking shape over the past few weeks, with iFani working to assemble a strong Eastern Cape contingent. He previously selected 15 names from public nominations while continuing to search for more MCs to join the campaign.
The Eastern Cape side, however, is still looking for additional rappers after some artists, including Dollxr, withdrew from the cypher. “Sisashota thina,” iFani said in a recent update, calling on more “majita namajitakazi” to step forward and represent the province. He also directly called out Kweriez, writing: “Kweriez, uphi?? Khawuvele uzosilwela brii.”
The format will see MCs from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal face off through a series of video releases, with each round putting the lyrical skills of both provinces under the spotlight. TruFM has joined the project as a media partner, while Nasty Energy Drink is backing the Eastern Cape side.
For iFani, the initiative also provides another platform for Xhosa hip-hop and the wider Eastern Cape rap scene to showcase its talent. The province has a long history of artists using vernacular rap to tell their stories, while KwaZulu-Natal has built its own strong hip-hop identity and cypher culture.
Zakwe’s involvement adds further weight to the KZN side, particularly given his connection to the Lockdown Cypher series. The first MC videos are expected at 2 pm today, with the Facebook Live session scheduled for 9 am. The EC vs KZN cypher has officially moved from preparation to competition, with both provinces now ready to put their bars on display.
