Rouge recently sat down with Zkhiphani TV to share her opinions on the importance of lyricism in SA hip-hop as well as what makes the SA hip-hop sound authentic and different.

The Popular hit maker mentions that we are in the space where rappers want to tell their own stories and the stories that go back generations. She mentions that that is specifically what gives SA hip-hop it’s authenticity.

She said, “I think that’s the reason why when the world now looks at Africa, we’re no longer in a space where they can’t tell who we are. We are so distinct now, in terms of our languages, in terms of what we are talking about, in terms of our experiences in terms of the way we interact with each other.”

In terms of the stories we are telling, we are telling South African stories, we’re telling South African interactions. We are using South African sounds to make sure that we don’t lose it in history, that we are no longer have our own sound and we no longer have our own stories.” Rouge continued.

Rouge also mentions that she can’t wait for the SA hip-hop genre to be able to reach the world like Anime and K-Pop does globally. She finishes off by saying we are on our way there, we just need to keep working at it.

In the interview she also talks about South Africa’s new wave of rappers specifically Blxckie, LucasRaps, Indigo Stella and Hanna are coming into the industry as strong lyricists. The only difference with the new wave, is that they have different stories to tell.
