AKA Opens Up About Why SA Hip Hop ‘Fell Off’. SA hip hop followers have been torn apart following the decline of SA hip hop in the past few years. The situation was bad to an extent that some SA Hip Hop OGs jumped ship to join the dominance of the Amapiano genre.

In an interview with SAHipHopMag, AKA admitted that the game went through a downward spiral. The award-winning rapper candidly stated that rappers who have been in the game for a long time shifted their focus and started focusing on other things. This then left young rappers to keep up with the dominance of the Yanos at that time.

“I think it also has to do with a lot of the big names not being at the forefront anymore, I mean, myself, K.O, Khuli,” he said. “We had carried it for so long and naturally we go into business, we do some other things and kinda left it to the younger guys to carry it, but also they were up against the rise of Amapiano. So the combination of the real gatekeepers and that thing kinda just easing off a bit, then the rise of Amapiano.”

The Supa Mega went on and made it clear that there is nothing wrong with the rise of other South African sounds such as Amapiano. “There is nothing wrong with the rise of Amapiano, it’s South African music, anything that is South African music that is amazing, is amazing,” he said.

With SA Hip Hop up against the Yanos’ dominance, AKA refused to admit that things went wrong in SA Hip Hop, instead describing it as a natural transition with certain role players no longer active. “When it comes to SA Hip Hop specifically, I wouldn’t say anything went wrong, I think things go in abs and flows, nothing went wrong, and there was never anything wrong,” he said. AKA added by saying; “I believe that when I’m not as active as I should be then SA Hip Hop is off.”

When asked about whether that is problematic to have a genre with few rappers and at the end when they are busy with other things, the genre is dead, AKA responded by saying; “I think that always been the thing about Hip Hop, Hip Hop is a community right and communities need leaders, so if you don’t have leaders of a community everybody is gonna be lost,” he added.
