Pretoria-based rapper Blaklez’s recent praise might come as a surprise to some. His optimistic outlook to some might be more rose-tinted glasses than a reflection of reality.

Nevertheless, while the quantity and perhaps the quality of music released may not match the golden era of SA Hip Hop, the rappers have been diligently striving to elevate the standards within the culture, consistently aiming to restore it to its former glory.

Blaklez took to Twitter (X) to commend the current state of SA Hip Hop, particularly emphasizing the high quality of music that has been released. The rapper expressed that the genre is thriving, citing the difficulty in crafting complete music projects and pointing to the excellence showcased in recent albums.

“As far as quality is concerned, SA Hip Hop is in a great space. Some really dope projects out and I’ve heard some that are still to come. Not easy putting a body of work together, imagine how hard putting a good one out is,” Blaklez said.

Even though the current state of the game might not be compared to the 2014-2015 era, it is noteworthy to point out that the current crop of SA rappers has done exceptional work, especially at a time when Amapiano and Afro Beats are at their prime.

The genre has seen an influx of rapidly emerging talents, including figures such as Blxckie, Bravo Le Roux, Dee Koala, Maglera Doe Boy, and Tyson Sybateli, Touchline Truth among others, making significant contributions to the culture. Adding to this momentum, some of these artists have even garnered attention from the international market, with Blxckie and Bravo Le Roux set to embark on international music tours.
