Rashid Kay: “SA Hip Hop always attracts broke people”
Rashid Kay: “SA Hip Hop always attracts broke people.” Veteran rapper Rashid Kay made a controversial statement, asserting that the genre consistently attracts fans who dont spend at events and clubs.
Speaking candidly during an appearance on Gigi Lamayne’s popular podcast Point Of View (POV), Rashid said that SA Hip hop fans dont spend at events. The veteran rapper has made significant contributions to the culture throughout the years, spearheading events like Back To The City and organizing Masterclass sessions aimed at uplifting the rap scene in South Africa.
However, he said that one of his Masterclass sessions was cancelled after a club owner complained that the Hip Hop crowd dont spend. “I used to do the Masterclass sessions every Sunday now I do them once a month because promoters and club owners are complaining,” he said.
“Somebody said to me you know you have five hundred people here, on Friday I had one hundred people but I made more money with a hundred amapiano people your five hundred people (SA Hip Hop fans) dont buy. I can fill up the venue and think the event was successful but they dont spend at the bar. That has always been the case with Hip Hop always attracting broke people. Hip hop is allergic to spending,” Rashid Kay said.
Rashid also emphasized that in light of the current atmosphere and reception within the SA hip-hop culture, a revival of the genre necessitates a return to the basics, starting anew from the drawing board. “We need to come up with some sort of a plan… If we can have 22,000 people without selling out the lineup like bringing other people the so-called crowd pullers from other genres. If we can pull 22,000 people then hip-hop is still there, people are still hungry for hip-hop, and that makes money,” he added.
