DJ Speedsta Unleashes A No-Skip Album With “120 Ocean View Drive”

DJ Speedsta Unleashes A No-Skip Album With “120 Ocean View Drive.” If albums could talk, 120 Ocean View Drive would be a calm, confident voice echoing off the cliffs of Cape Town—reflective, rooted, and roaring with purpose. DJ Speedsta’s long-awaited second album arrived on July 18, and it’s already redefining what hip-hop from the tip of Africa can sound and feel like.

Crafted under the artistic guidance of Zoocci Coke Dope, 120 Ocean View Drive is more than a follow-up to 2019’s BottlebrushStr—it’s a reinvention. Recorded at the scenic coastal home that gives the album its name, this 10-track experience is Speedsta’s most honest offering yet, a curated collection of clarity, collaboration, and cultural pride.

With the explosive “Violate” featuring Zoocci, Usimamane, and Tony Dayimane, the album pulls no punches. It’s bold, razor-sharp, and sets a tone that refuses to play it safe. From the trunk-thumping energy of “SHiNDiNi” (with 25K, Ney The Bae, and Blue Pappi) to the streetwise elegance of “My Way (Zoolos Version)” featuring Blxckie and Vsinare. Each track strikes a balance between braggadocio and vulnerability. The final song, “Pardon My French” (featuring Zoocci and Lucasraps), is a heartfelt, melodic curtain call—gentle, but far from forgettable

And while the soundscape is rich, it’s the ensemble cast that turns 120 Ocean View Drive into a full-fledged festival of talent. From veterans like Priddy Ugly and Frank Casino to soulful voices like Rowlene and Aubrey Qwana, Speedsta’s Rolodex is on full display. Kash CPT, Maglera Doe Boy, Flow Jones Jr., Die Mondez—the features read like a who’s who of SA hip-hop’s present and future. Under Zoocci’s masterful curation, each voice finds its moment, yet nothing feels crowded or chaotic.

The project’s momentum wasn’t without turbulence. The AI-generated cover art for “Violate” drew criticism from podcaster Mswenko Franko, who dubbed it “a lazy cop-out” that underdelivered on the project’s otherwise rich creativity.

The album soared to #59 on the Apple Music Album Chart within hours, a testament to its immediate pull.

But perhaps the most compelling story isn’t the features, nor the numbers—it’s the transformation. Since moving to Cape Town in 2023, Speedsta has shed the noise and leaned into his instincts. The result is a body of work that fuses ambition with authenticity, hustle with heart.

From the waves that crash outside his new home to the waves he’s now making across the culture, 120 Ocean View Drive is a defining moment in Speedsta’s journey
