Emtee Walks Free After 16 Days In Custody As Wife Withdraws Case. Emtee stepped out of Johannesburg Correctional Centre on Wednesday after a Midrand magistrate granted him R2,000 bail. He had spent 16 days behind bars following his arrest for breaking a protection order taken out by his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy.

According to TimesLive, the court appearance was originally set down for possible trial. Instead, the magistrate considered fresh facts after Chinsamy filed a formal withdrawal of the case on Monday. Standing in the witness box, she told the court: “I decided to withdraw the case. I’d like to close this chapter and move on with my life.”

Emtee exercised his right to remain silent. His advocate, Kwena Manamela, placed an affidavit before the court explaining the hardship the arrest had caused. The document stated that Ndevu’s parents, Lumikile and Phathiswa Ndevu, together with his three young children, had been left struggling. Rent and school fees had gone unpaid since the day of his detention.

Bail was granted on strict conditions. Emtee must not breach the existing protection order in any way, including the ban on posting about Chinsamy on social media. The court did, however, ease one restriction. He may now contact her, but only about matters involving their three minor children. He is due back in court on 10 September for further representations.

The case forms part of a longer legal and personal battle that has played out publicly for years. Chinsamy first obtained the protection order in 2023. It barred Emtee from verbally abusing her or harassing her through social media. In June this year, he handed himself over to Midrand police after an alleged incident at her home. He spent a night in custody before receiving R1,000 bail with tight restrictions that included a complete ban on any form of contact and an order to remove existing posts about her.

Those conditions were later breached. In mid-August, his bail was revoked after he allegedly sent text messages to Chinsamy that used an offensive name. He was returned to custody at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, known locally as Sun City, where he remained until Wednesday’s hearing.

During his time inside, tensions also flared between his family and his current partner, singer Nandi Ndathane. Emtee’s parents travelled to Gauteng and attempted to secure his belongings, including his car, phones and bank cards, citing concerns about unpaid rent. The dispute led to further protection order applications and public exchanges that added another layer of strain while the rapper sat in detention.

While Emtee was locked up, a wave of online support emerged under the hashtag #FreeEmtee. Fans and fellow artists used the tag to call for his release and express solidarity. Grammy-winning producer Zakes Bantwini was among those who publicly backed him, posting a message of prayer and attaching the hashtag. Some supporters even claimed to have started the campaign, keeping the conversation alive across social media until the court granted bail. Moments after the news broke on Wednesday, the same hashtag resurfaced in celebration as fans welcomed the rapper’s release.

The couple, who share three children, have not finalised their divorce. Emtee has previously spoken about the difficulties of the separation, while both sides have traded claims of abuse in the past.
