Speaking during an interview with Candice Modiselle on The Five Minute Call podcast Priddy Ugly said that the manner in which he reacted to winning the award was because he is used to not winning. “I think I went there like I’m just so used to not winning,” he said.

“That’s not even pessimism, it’s just ah things go the way they go, award shows whatever, I was like oh I’ve been nominated how many times before? So when I got my name called out I was like yeah definitely I deserve to win, it’s about time.”

Priddy Ugly admitted he had conflicted feelings when he was announced as the winner, confessing that he had always desired the accolade but wishing he had been more appreciative of it. “But I was also there just feeling a little bit like, I always wanted to win an award and im on this stage accepting this award and it’s just like I wish I was a little more grateful for it.”

“But it was also like the reason I do this thing has never been like to receive praise from people, I think the thing was like how many people were so happy for me to win,” said Priddy Ugly.

The rapper enjoyed a successful year in the rap game with his second album MUD receiving a massive reception and went on to dominate the music charts. During the awards presentation, the father of one admitted that he wasn’t expecting to win as he gave a shout-out to all the rappers whom he competed with for the award.

“I didn’t really prep anything, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting it, shoutout to all the nominations, Zulu Mecca, my favourite lyricist,” he said.
