Dee Koala Opens Up About The Heartfelt Meaning Behind Her Sophomore Album “iiNtsikelelo”

Dee Koala Opens Up About The Heartfelt Meaning Behind Her Sophomore Album “iiNtsikelelo.” South African rapper Dee Koala is no stranger to turning personal experiences into powerful music, and her sophomore album, iiNtsikelelo, is a deeply intimate testament to her life’s journey.

In a recent discussion about the project, Dee Koala revealed the profound story behind the album’s title and the family dynamics that shaped her.
“When people ask me about iiNtsikelelo, it goes back to my mom,” Dee Koala shared. “My mommy’s name is Nontsikelelo, but I grew up really close to my grandmother. I would call my grandmother my mom, and my actual mom would just go by her name.”
Dee Koala explained that her mother wasn’t ready to raise her and left her in her grandmother’s care. “I grew up with my mom being my grandmother, so whenever I speak about my mother, everyone knows who I’m talking about. But when I say Ntsiki, I would talk about her,” she said.
The rapper also opened up about her grandfather, whom she considers her father. “When I say my dad, I mean my grandfather, because I don’t really know who that guy is. So if I’m saying mom and dad, I’m talking about these specific people,” she explained.
This unique family structure wasn’t without its challenges. Dee Koala admitted that the revelation during high school that her grandmother wasn’t her biological mother affected her deeply. Yet, it also became a moment of growth and understanding. “I started appreciating the blessings because if she hadn’t left me with my grandmother, I don’t know what would have happened to me. I was able to go to school, have a roof over my head, and get an education. I think she knew what she was doing,” Dee Koala reflected.
The heartfelt journey of forgiveness and reconciliation is at the core of iiNtsikelelo. Dee Koala shared that she and her mother were able to bond and mend their relationship before her mother passed away. “I’m glad we managed to fix a lot of things, and we were fine,” she said, closing a chapter of her life with gratitude.
With iiNtsikelelo, Dee Koala not only delivers her signature lyrical prowess but also invites listeners into the most personal corners of her life, transforming her pain, forgiveness, and love into music that resonates far beyond her own story.
