Kabelo Mabalane Explains The Meaning Behind His For King & Country Album Title

Speaking about the meaning behind the title, the South African musician explained that his love for historical films and the world of monarchies introduced him to the phrase “For King and Country”, a declaration he encountered repeatedly while watching movies depicting English history and wartime traditions.

The phrase stayed with him long before he connected it to his own faith and identity as a South African. “I watch a lot of movies. I’m a, I guess you can call me a royalist, you know, a fan of that whole monarchy situation and how it works with kings and queens and all of that stuff,” Mabalane explained.

He recalled how the phrase would appear in films depicting soldiers going to war, with the words “For King and Country” representing their allegiance to the crown and their homeland.

However, as his journey progressed, the phrase took on a much deeper meaning. Mabalane explained that his understanding of kingship is now rooted in his relationship with Jesus Christ, whom he recognises as his King, while South Africa represents the country he wants to see flourish.

“Fast forward to now, where I do have a king and His name is Jesus. I do live in a country which is South Africa,” he said.

For Kabelo Mabalane, the title represents more than a historical reference or a clever play on words. It reflects his conviction that faith in Jesus Christ can bring meaningful change to individuals and, ultimately, the nation.

He acknowledged that not everyone shares his perspective on the role of Christianity in addressing South Africa’s challenges, but maintained that his personal experience of what Jesus has done in his life shapes his belief in the transformative power of the Gospel.

“I happen to believe that the answer is Jesus, you know, for all the problems in our country. People beg to differ, but that’s another story for another day. I know what He’s done for me,” he said.

Mabalane further expressed his belief that the impact of faith could extend far beyond one person’s life, pointing to South Africa’s population as a reminder of the potential for widespread transformation.

“If you multiply me out by 60 million, you can pretty much change the world. If He can do it for me, He can do it for you,” he added.

Ultimately, Mabalane said the title captures his desire to honour Jesus Christ while using his God-given abilities to contribute positively to the country.

“The album title For King & Country is really doing it to glorify my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, but also to use my talents, my gifts to advance everything good in this country,” he explained.

Through the title, Mabalane brings together two central convictions: his allegiance to Jesus Christ and his desire to see South Africa move towards a better future. What began as a phrase that captured his imagination through historical films has become an expression of his faith, purpose and commitment to using his gifts for something greater than himself.
