During an exchange with SlikouronLife, Mabalane was asked about his last conversation with AKA and shared how the rapper spoke about his music, his faith and his plans to spread the gospel through an upcoming tour with Joy Celebration.

According to Mabalane, AKA attended the home cell gathering on a Tuesday night and announced that he was preparing to release Mass Country. He asked those present to pray for the project, which was important to him, as well as for his planned tour.

“He said, bro, I’m dropping an album. It’s called Mass Country. Please can we pray for that album today? And I’m actually going on tour. I’m going on tour with Joy Celebration,” Mabalane recalled.

The conversation took an unexpected turn just before the gathering began. Although AKA had initially asked for prayers for both the album and the tour, he changed his mind, insisting that the group focus only on the album.

“And then before home cell started, he said, actually no, don’t pray for the tour. Leave the tour. Just pray for the album,” Mabalane explained.

After the gathering, the group prayed, and Mabalane remembered wanting to include the tour in the prayer. However, AKA maintained that he wanted the prayers to focus on his album.

Looking back, Mabalane said the moment has stayed with him, particularly because the tour never came to pass following the rapper’s untimely death.

“That is what I remember, the last conversation being, is that Tuesday night before the fateful Friday when he sadly lost his life,” he said.

AKA died on February 10, 2023, in Durban, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate across South African hip-hop. His fourth studio album, Mass Country, was released posthumously on February 24, 2023.

Mabalane’s recollection offers a deeply personal glimpse into AKA’s final days, highlighting a side of the rapper that extended beyond his musical ambitions. In what would become their last conversation, AKA was not only preparing to share new music with the world but also asking those around him to pray for what he hoped to accomplish.
