Roiii Opens Up About The Gritty Side Of Drill Sound In SA

The young rapper’s insatiable hunger and unwavering determination propelled him forward, driving his relentless pursuit of success in the fiercely competitive realm of rap. Roiii made a mark in the game when he dropped a drill joint Lavida Loca, a style and sound that showcased his uniqueness as a rapper who aimed to try something different.

While drill undeniably bolstered Roiii‘s success, the Pretoria-based rapper shed light on the prevalent lack of unity among drill artists. Despite these divisions, Roiii commended certain individuals within the community who steadfastly pushed boundaries, contributing to the evolution of drill sound in South Africa.

“THE HARDEST THING ABOUT DRILL IN SOUTH AFRICA WAS COMMUNITY. WE DIDN’T HAVE MUCH OF ONE. BUT FROM WHAT IM SEEING GROWING! SALUTE TO NIGGAS LIKE @espiquet @jollyb_official012 @magleradoeboy @ziggyx4 @officialrafdon @tamcarson_sa @zt78sa @levaigotdajuice & Building!” Roiii wrote.

During an interview on SlikourOnLife last year, Roiii expressed that embracing the drill sound invited its own set of criticisms. However, he emphasized that he grew increasingly accustomed to such critiques, ultimately finding comfort in navigating them.

“We dont like new ideas, especially as South Africans we are very judgemental about something that we’re not used to. So for me, I’m very comfortable with myself now more than I have ever been,” Roiii said. “I was a total contrast to who I am now. I was insecure, I was a little chubby, I was a little bit sensitive.

“I didn’t have a sound for the longest time, I didn’t know I was going to go into the drill. I was just a floater, so the moment I found my footing I became okay with criticism because as long as the music is good, there’s nothing you can do to hurt me.”
