The rapper achieved the Best Newcomer Award, garnering recognition for her music not only in South Africa but also extending her musical prowess across Europe. Nevertheless, Toya has been on an extended hiatus, and her impact on the music industry seems to have dwindled.

The rapper’s prolonged absence prompted speculation that she had fallen off, as she was no longer actively engaged in creating music compared to her earlier days. Taking to Twitter (X), Toya slammed naysayers who claimed she had fallen off after she won the Production Music Award.

“Bonke ababe bholoza amanga aluhlaza cwe kuthiwa kiff kiff Toya fell off, kwasha kwacima kwa vutha amalangamu nasi isipho senu – mzansi eyethu lendondo ❤️ umona phansi bafwethu! cease fire ngeke manje, xolani, ayidle izishiyele,” which translate to;

“All those who were blabbering green lies, it is said kiff kiff Toya fell off, then the flames went out and here is your gift – below is our glass ❤️ you are jealous on the ground, brothers! Cease fire will not come now, calm down,” she wrote.

After winning the award, Toya revealed that the last eight years have marked a personal odyssey of self-discovery and healing since she relocated from South Africa to the UK as an independent artist. Unfortunately, that choice was misunderstood, and wrongly perceived as a decline in her capability rather than a continued pursuit of excellence.

“When music found me I was in a very dark place, dealing with heavy losses & depression which needed release. I found joy & healing through the expression which connected me with others who related or just saw me on TV or heard me on the radio.

“For the past 8 years I have been rebranding, finding my voice, while moving against the grain, there was a lot of healing I had to do from SA after I went independent, & many thought I fell off 😂 cuz I wasn’t on the mainstream even though I was releasing music being indie is tough but this hiatus was needed, no matter what anyone was saying, I was listening to what my heart was saying & that led me to create Afrorave which now is getting industry recognition,” said Toya Delazy.
